KITESURFING CAIRNS

There are plenty of great places for kitesurfing in the Cairns area. We are blessed with a variety of conditions and one of the longer seasons around.   Cairns Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing Yorkeys Knob

Yorkeys Knob is just one of the great places for kitesurfing in Cairns. With big flat lagoons and sweet little kickers, it’s hard to look past the place really.

Conditions

The wind direction is very consistent at Yorkeys Knob. It pretty much blows from the south east for 8 months of the year. So I guess you kinda always know what to expect. The Yorkeys Knob river mouth is what really brings kitesurfing to Cairns. The amazing lagoons and consistent winds are what sets this place apart from anywhere else in Australia. Every year is always a surprise when it come to the shape  of the lagoons. During the wet season we often get a lot of rain, causing the rivers to flood and  form new sandbars and lagoons.

How to get there

To get to the kitesurfing rigging area at Yorkeys Knob, simply head north along the Captain Cook Highway. You will see the turn off to Yorkeys Knob about 15 km’s to the north of Cairns City. When you arrive at Yorkeys Knob, head to the very south of Sims Esplanade. There you will see the grassy area where people rig and clean down their Equipment.

Season

As I said earlier, Cairns has one of the longest kitesurfing seasons around. The season usually starts around the beginning of March and can run all the way through to Christmas. The peak months would have to be May – November

Kitesurfing Palm Cove

Palm Cove is another great place for kitesurfing in Cairns. The Waves are definitely the biggest in the area too. There is also Double Island just offshore, which is a pretty good flat water spot.

Conditions

Palm Cove is one of the better spots for kitesurfing in Cairns on those super southerly days. I find the wind always seems to be a lot more consistent that say Yorkeys Knob when it has a lot if southerly in it. In saying that, it is also fine for kitesurfing on those days blowing more to the east. Palm Cove seems to pick up on the wind swell a bit more than the rest of the area. So if you after waves, this is the spot to go to. Double Island is even better when blowing from the south, as the wind has more time to gain consistency. There’s plenty of flat water riding and heaps of marine life to look out for too.

How to get there

Same Direction as Yorkeys Knob, just another 10 -15 km’s along the highway. You will see the turn off, as it clearly sign posted. Head straight down to Williams Esplanade. The rigging area is about 100 metres to the very south of the Esplanade. Best bet is to find a carpark and walk along the beach. There’s a big clear area, which is perfect for launching and landing. If you want to kite out to Double Island, just simply kite over. The tide really needs to be over 1.2 metres for it to be good. If it’s any lower, there’s usually a lot of exposed areas.

Season

The Kitesurfing season starts a little bit earlier at Palm Cove than Yorkeys Knob. Early season usually brings winds slightly more to the south, meaning Palm Cove is usually a lot more consistent.  Yorkeys Knob tends to get more of a thermal breeze, so is probably a bit more consistent later in the year.   For more information check out our  https://pacificwatersports.com.au  https://pacificwatersports.com.au/contact/   If you want to Know more about other kitesurfing locations in Australia click here
